What a Vapor Barrier Does
Florida ground releases moisture continuously — more here in Polk County than most of the state, given our water table. A 6-mil (or thicker) polyethylene barrier under the home blocks that moisture from reaching the insulation and wooden subfloor above it. When the barrier fails:

But if the barrier is more than 10–15 years old, has widespread tears, or the insulation above it is already wet, patching is throwing money at a failed system.
